The Chem-Dry Hot Carbonating Extraction process — the gentle, low-moisture clean we use on wool.
The Benefits of Chem-Dry Wool Carpet Cleaning
Here is what sets our wool carpet cleaning apart across the Southern Highlands.
Carpets Dry in 1–2 Hours
Our Hot Carbonating Extraction process uses a fraction of the water of steam cleaning, so your carpets are dry quickly and you can be back on your floors the same day.
Cleaning and Protection
Every clean can be finished with carpet protection — a protective film over the fibres that stops spills and soiling getting deep into the carpet. There is no change to the look or feel of your carpet.
It Prolongs the Life of Your Carpet
Cleaning your carpets regularly will prolong the life of your valuable carpets, saving you what could be thousands of dollars over their lifespan.
Three Decades of Local Experience
Tony Woods has been a Chem-Dry franchisee for three decades, cleaning Southern Highlands homes the whole time. No subcontractors, no trainees.
No Soapy Residue
The Natural is pH-balanced and leaves no sticky detergent film behind — so your carpets do not attract dirt back the way they do after a detergent-based clean.
Satisfaction Guarantee
If you are not happy with the cleaning results, we will return and re-clean free of charge.
Why Wool Needs a Different Clean to Everything Else
Wool is a protein fibre. It holds its shape, hides soil, resists crushing and ages better than anything synthetic — which is why so much of the carpet in older Southern Highlands homes is wool, and why it is still worth paying for today.
It is also the fibre most easily damaged by cleaning. Wool absorbs a great deal of water, and wet wool can shrink, stretch, brown out or lose the natural lanolin that keeps the pile soft. Over-wetting is the single most common way a good wool carpet is ruined — and it is almost always permanent.
Everything we do on a wool carpet is built around one rule: get it clean without soaking it.
How We Clean Wool Without Damaging It
Four decisions that matter more on wool than on any other fibre.
Low Moisture by Design
Hot Carbonating Extraction uses roughly 80% less water than a traditional steam clean, so wool is cleaned rather than saturated — no shrinkage, no stretching, no browning.
pH-Balanced, No Residue
Wool reacts badly to alkaline products. The Natural is pH-balanced and leaves no detergent film, so the fibre keeps its natural handle instead of turning stiff.
Gentle Handling of the Pile
Wool pile crushes and felts under hard agitation. We pre-treat, extract and then groom the pile back into place rather than scrubbing it.
Drying That Suits Wool
Wool holds moisture longer than synthetic fibre. Because so little water goes in, the carpet dries in 1–2 hours and the backing and underlay are never soaked.
Cleaning a Wool Carpet, Step by Step
Slower, gentler and more deliberate than a synthetic clean.
Fibre and Construction Check
Wool, wool blend or wool-look synthetic? How tightly is it woven? Is there underlay that will not tolerate water? We establish all of this before we start.
Colour-Fastness Test
Plant-dyed and heavily coloured wool can migrate when it gets wet. We test an inconspicuous area for colour stability on every wool carpet, every time.
Gentle Dry Vacuuming
A slow, thorough dry pass. Wool releases dry soil easily, and removing it first means less chemistry is needed later.
Low-Moisture Pre-Treatment
A pH-balanced pre-treatment is applied sparingly to traffic lanes and marks and given time to work — the cleaning happens here, not with pressure.
Hot Carbonating Extraction
A measured, even pass that lifts soil without flooding the fibre or the backing.
Grooming and Controlled Drying
The pile is groomed back upright and dried through so no moisture sits against the backing. Dry in 1–2 hours.
Wool Carpets, Wool Rugs and Wool Furnishings
The same rules apply to every piece of wool in the house. A fitted wool carpet, a wool area rug, a wool-blend lounge fabric and a wool underlay all react to water the same way — which is why we clean all of them the same low-moisture way.
Wool rugs get the extra care they need in our rug workshop, where delicate and hand-knotted pieces are cleaned, dried flat and returned. If you are not sure whether a piece is wool or a wool blend, send us a photo or call Tony and we will tell you honestly before you book.
